Cornstarch...a powdered miracle worker!

I have been using some cute letter stamps in some of my pieces last week including these adorable herb markers that will be available at my upcoming Spring shows. To keep the clay from sticking I dip my stamps into a little cornstarch and VIOLA! Once it all dries the cornstarch just sweeps right off.

This same process can be used if you are using any sort of rubber or plastic material to make an impression in the clay. Sprinkle a little cornstarch on the clay and then press your design into it...the cornstarch allows the plastic material to release from the clay without ripping it. (It is a lot like adding flour to your dough to keep it from sticking to the rolling pin or board)

Thank you cornstarch...(and now back to cleaning up the pieces I made and getting them in the kiln!)

  1. genius! i love these, and the plates, and your hearts and little elephants, and . . . . I'm seriously wanting to collect more of your handmade dishes and serving pieces. Are you making any with light-colored glazes?

  2. Thank you for your flattering words! I am always happy to glaze my dishes in other glazes that I already carry. Currently I am glazing most of the embossed dishes in blue. Thank you again! :)
